Small apartments

The price per square metre sometimes forces us to buy a smaller apartment than we really need. That is exactly why small apartments call for every part of the space to be planned precisely, so we can make up for the lack of square metres.

It is important to think every detail through, from the colour of the interior to practical, modular solutions and functionality.

However well equipped and functional they are, small spaces need to feel airy and comfortable – a home you enjoy spending time in.

We achieve this with light, neutral colours, mirrors that make the space look larger, and lighting that creates warmth and fills the room with light.

In spaces like these, the walls are usually covered with shelves and wardrobes in neutral colours and simple shapes, so that they practically read as the walls they cover.

Wardrobes should not be too deep, and there should not be too many open sections that make the space feel busy. Floors should also be calm – not too textured or too dark – because simple patterns and light colours open up the space. Curtains should be light and airy, and sofas and beds not oversized and mostly low-profile, so they don't weigh the space down.

Small spaces often have no dining room; the compromise is a kitchen island with counter stools, or a bar that divides the space or runs along a wall.

Mini bathrooms in small apartments are often only partly tiled, with one feature wall, usually in the shower or above the washbasin. They must be well lit and ventilated, and oversized illuminated mirrors can also make them look bigger.

Mini apartments often have no doors except for the bathroom; instead, we separate the different functional areas visually in various ways, which keeps the space open.

Small apartments don't have to be strictly white, boring or free of decorations and art. In fact, this is exactly where a careful selection and refined taste really stand out.

In the end, small apartments are a challenge, but a sweet one. Because we do love these small, well-used spaces that feel like our own little world, where at the end of the day we can relax and truly feel at home.

And yes, many small apartments have passed through my hands – always welcome, and always approached with special enthusiasm. Because challenges are what I do and what I love.
